Invitation Only: Beta RP Photo DB

Dear all,

Last night, I saw this comment from Chris:

“Kel, r u getting owned by the school or u’re just being humble and let them be more powerful? Many times when i am under vpn i totally cannot enter this site, and when i am able to, just like Ling, the photo database now is worse than when it just started, you have to type EXACTLY the name that is of the person’s to get results. Things like student id, module or class or even juz surnames amount to zero results. What happened man..?”

..and to be honest, I think his comment was the first which accurately described the problem with the current DB.

Some of you guys have been messaging me saying stuff like “It’s broken”, and “please fix it” – but nobody really described the problem at all!

Anyways, what’s done is done, and, it’s time for work to be done, too. I’ve created a new version of the database, and this time, you guys and gals are going to get to test it first – before it’s officially open to the public.

Features currently IN (that means i build already, lah) already are:

- Everyone’s photo, of course.

- Searching back past THREE years in RP’s history of classes (yes, means you can see everyone’s class for THREE years = SIX semesters)

- Reviewing your facilitators, whether they rock, or suck, or both

- Commenting on other students

- Automated requesting of handphone numbers and MSN addresses

- Viewing what class a facilitator has EVER taken/taught

Features to be implemented:

- Finding RP’ians who live near your house based on postal code

- ..loads more.

Hence, as with all “beta” (meaning, testing – and means it will work, but NOT flawlessly) programs, this is invitation only.

To get an invitation to the new database, you can either:

a) Drop me a message on Facebook – search for “Kelvin Leong”, it’s the picture with the tilted head

b) E-mail me at kelvin@yandao.com – with the subject “Yandao.com Beta Invite”

c) Leave a comment below, and in the e-mail box, fill up your real e-mail address. Nobody can see it except me.

That’s about it, if you want access to it *now*, do one of the following, I’ll get back to you within the day. Or else you can wait like everyone else.

    Nice… but just wondering, won’t the upgraded features invite more trouble(warnings) from the school??? You know, the situation where student is not happy with faci then anyhow comment on them or vice versa. On the positive side, I can see that it wil be a great tool to allow students to get explanations from their individual faci (be it grading, places to improve on blah blah blah)…

    Hehe: Well, yes, more warnings, perhaps. But there is a need for this thing, issues have to be resolved.

    Then again, I’m in my final year, dude :) So, chill.
    In my opinion, students can comment with faci’s if they’re not happy – I, myself, admit to having petitioned faci’s before.

    But you know what – after I petition the faci, no matter how many says that faci “sucks” or etc, someone ALWAYS defends them, and protects them from the rant or criticism. This is the beauty when things are done openly and not enclosed.

    Also, one feature which I intend to include are “digs” and “burys” – meaning that if a comment is truly horrible, people can “bury” (say that this comment is UNCONSTRUCTIVE, and uncalled for, and it will eventually be ranked damn lowly)

    Well then, you have my full support. Cause I believe that the voices of the students should be heard by the higher ups, for improvements to be made to this system which has quite a handful of flaws in it (Eg. unfair grading which a handful from my class are discontented with it).

    Actually, we can still go yandao even under vpn, but must go through a search engine. Like, just search for yandao.com under yahoo or google then can already. Somehow, the school doesn’t block your website when we use a search engine to find your site. Hmmm. Don’t know if they overlook this, but hurray anyway :mrgreen:

    Not sure if i’m right, it’s just a guess because I’ve tried it during lessons and it works :grin:

    i guess knowing who stays near you is fun! but, maybe you shouldn’t reveal the address or postal code cause some students have a unique postal code (private houses). i suppose this will only reveal more of the students life to everyone which can be really disturbing!

    do be mindful of how much the students are willing to share (: maybe you could allow us to opt for what can be shown. maybe it wont be as fun but i guess its only right that we get to choose how much we want others to know about us.
