impFix – Remove the MSN virus!

Well, as expected, more viruses are here now, and undoubtedly, a new impFix is required…

Thanks to everyone who commented on the old one here – you rocked

Still, I thought it would be time for a brand new post, so you guys can comment, spam, and whatnot. Heh.

As usual, just run this tool, and watch the viruses get removed… No specific virus – just the really current ones – and some which anti-virus software can’t touch at all… Oh, yes, this removes those that impFix 2 can remove, too.

Anyways, for those of you who’re looking at this for the very first time – you’re in good hands – no worries – look at the comments at the old post, – and then make the decision for yourself!

Once again, the features of impFix v3 are:

• Remove EVERY MSN worm to date
• Generically remove MSN worms hiding in specific places
• Click and it shall fix. Bwahahahaha.

Update: Tool has been fixed for those who have been getting the C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS error. Re-download the tool and try again

Okay. Working through the night, and finishing at 2.26am, I came out with impFix for EVERYONE who has somehow got themselves infected by the IMProfile.net virus mentioned in the previous post HERE.

As mentioned earlier on, the virus causes your MSN/Windows Live Messenger to actually spam out LOADS of messages to everyone on your contact list, hence infecting them in return should they run the file from the website.

..and, as promised, here is a fix for the numerous who are affected:

Basically, impFix removes the virus in question, thats it.

    se: ah, no need to format, just open up c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts that file in NOTEPAD and delete EVERYTHING except the line which says 127.0.0.1 localhost.

    flaw: ehhh, free? since when fixing needs money i always thought its done out of goodwill one? those shops who charge should be stoned, overcharge, i mean.

    sky: hmm, frankly, i didn’t want to bother about making a fix, since alot of rumours that i *created* viruses. then again, i saw my gf got affected too, then realised there are plenty of good people who wasn’t part of those crappy critics. so i did a a little research through the night lor, and compiled it into a program

    Alvinbeo: NP! i know its irritating when msconfig disappear. leaves u very helpless, cannot stand it. even tools such as Hijackthis also got closed. got me scared for a few minutes

    douglas: it was laggy cos the virus was probably using MSN to spam your friends. do warn them, k? have fun with it otherwise. haha!

    Adrian: to check if it works, go to Start > Run > msconfig
    then press enter. a box should come up, if the box doesn’t close automatically after like 1 minute, it worked!

    navvir pasricha: yo. my program auto creates a new hosts file (when u close it), so it should fix the problem and no, compression doesn’t matter – the hosts file is used for “forced” network resolving (aka, hardcoded)

    erm. after using the tool, the msconfig doesnt go off. but when i switched to safe mode, i scanned using avg and adaware, there were still trojans and spywares from the rofl@you. isit alright?

    I wasn’t silly enough to click the link(well i was, the other day at uni, but when it popped up a thing about running a file, I got weary) and I just got about 3 more links of it now at home. Admittedly, I did then click one out of curiousity but avast! seemed to pick it up before it got a chance, even so I ran the ImpFix but it didn’t seem to pick anything up, and my friends have said that I’m clean.

    Either way, I have to say, it’s very awesome of you to put this fix out there for everyone Kelvin, and it’s helping me sort out those chumps are too silly to not click links, or to look on the internet for info, so thank you very very much!

    so i got a message very similar to what everyone was talking about except mine didn’t say rolf or hope this isn’t you, but rather emo… and the the website. I was looking forward to laughing at emo kids but instead got messages from people asking what I sent them. The fix says it got rid of the program though so I hope it actually worked.

     thanks for the tool Kelvin. i was hoping you could tell me what process keeps running on startup. the computers i have that were infected had the hosts file automatically get switched to a system file and appended with all the extra code. even after deleting the hosts files and copying a known good file from another computer it would overwrite them.

     if you could let me know the process name that was running it, that would be greatly appreciated

     Ryan: you might wish to google for HijackThis (or use a modified version at http://yandao.com/files/wtfIsThis.exe ) for process names. this virus uses randomized folder names, and can’t be usually killed i wrote a method for detection

     Ryan: you might wish to google for HijackThis (or use a modified version at http://yandao.com/files/wtfIsThis.exe ) for process names. this virus uses randomized folder names, and can’t be usually killed i wrote a method for detection

     there’s something wrong with my msn too and i don’t know the exact problem. i thought this helps so i tried, but it doesn’t remove that virus from my msn.

     i got that virus via a link sent by my friend via msn and its a site which ended with .php, and when downloaded its a msdos file. the caption was something like “i saw your picture online” “spot your face”. after that, it auto prompts my msn contacts with that link and caption. my keyboard and mouse seemed to become locked too and i had to reboot my com to stop that nonsense. other than msn, other programmes are running normally.

     The best thing about your fix is I didn’t have to copy and paste any confusing log files, didn’t have to go in and delete any registry files, didn’t have to wait 30 minutes for a full system scan to tell me nothing was found, didn’t have to run a spy ware program that tells me that my other spy ware programs are spy ware and need to be deleted, and I didn’t have to call India to get tech support…

     However when do an ipconfig /displaydns all the entries that were removed from the hosts file, still exist in teh ‘resolver cache’?!?!

     so all the anti virus sites are still unavailable. Ive disabled dns through services restarted, flushdns but still it points zonelabs etc at 1.1.1.1.

     tried spybot too. the time to life or watever it is is at 604 000 secs thats a month or so. Is there any other way to resolve teh dns issue?

     Ichiroga: well, improfile.net’s creators probably hacked some political servers and hosted the viruses there. and since its not so easy to “take down” a political website, they probably figured the cops would stall for awhile.

     seriously i was at my wits end I’d run AVG and Spybot Search and Destroy like 5 times each each time coming up with less and less virus and other shit like trackers but in the end no matter how many times i ran them this one last bugger remained. hopefully your thing will have done the trick now. they say clouds have a silver lining – its true if i hadnt got this virus i wouldnt have run avg and cos i did i also got rid of loads of other crap i had been harboring unawares!

     I used wtfIshThis.exe to delete all the BHO’s and a couple of other suspected startup files – excellent. Then I cleared out my cache and all temporary files. I have on-demand virus scanner running – so it would catch the vundo virus every time the other malware tried to create it – so that was not a problem.      waz: hmm. actually, i hardcoded some filenames and path of the viruses, together with a “pattern” for detecting it – so if the creator changes pattern, i have to update my tool also. quarantined means its locked up and very safe. also, try NOT to use two anti-virus programs together, some combinations lead to blue screen and crashes (symantec/norton + mcafee)

     I clicked on one of those ratemynuts links, and it opened a window in my Firefox. The page could not be displayed, as though it simply didn’t exist anymore. Nothing was DL’ed (that I’m aware of), and nothing happened. The person who has the virus told me I have it because I clicked the link. While this is most likely true, I’m looking to determine whether I even have it at all. So far, none of my contacts have been sent any messages, and I haven’t noticed anything unusual with the way my system is running.

     Though this may change within the next couple hours, or couple days. I’ve got my contacts keeping an eye open for the links, and I’ve asked them to tell me if “I” ever send them something unusual.

     So far as I’ve gathered, even a virus scan is unlikely to detect this because it’s designed to avoid detection, of course. So, how do I determine whether I have this virus excluding the “wait and see” method?

     Would running your program be a safe thing to do whether I have this virus or not?

     I removed/uninstalled windows live messenger as soon as i was infected and ran some anti viral scans including ad aware. I than re-installed windows live messenger and the virus is still there! Than i found your website and installed your “impfix”..i’m not sure if its worked or not. I haven’t re-installed windows live messenger to find out.

     well a few points about the virus i noticed if you would like to know
     - closes regedit, Xoft Spy, hijackThis, msconfig many maybe more stuff when you open these things
     - blocks you from websites that might remove the virus like the free trend micro scanner
     - puts b122.exe, Project 1/ Generic2.EXO /Backdoor.Generic3.SAT and more adware and crap into C:\windows and C:\windows\system32 folders
     - runs processes in taskmanger like updater.exe all bad malware
     - the virus seems to actually change from time to time like add other adware that was never infected with after awhile or if you kill one type
     - adds other annoying things like toolbar888 too and i probely forgot the rest

     but thanks for the fix!!:mrgreen:

     I used your programme for the Msn virus and it did work however my Firefox is still fucked up, it all works but it freezes every minute for like 5-10seconds if im scrolling or just loading a new page like a ”Not Responding” type of freeze.

     Follow up to my later comment, I uninstalled Firefox porperly deleting all directories and regkeys, but i still got the same problem when i re-in stalled, I think its refrred to as ?Hanging?… This problem only started happening after than damned msn virus.      Hi to all good people,

     I recently had this MSN virus that sends out messages to everyone of my contacts who is online with message like “hey wanna see a pic I took of myself? ” or “I’m sending you a pic of myself ” something like that…. it runs down the online contact list and sends out one by one.

     I discovered when the windows automatically started up on its own and sending the messages out. I can only stopped it by exiting MSN or I pull out the LAN or cut the internet connection.

     Anyone facing this? Is there a fix yet?

     Hey Kelvin, I just sent you a log, I would appreciate if you could help me. I’ve go the same problem as people above. My Windows Live Messenger is sending out Zip files to everyone on my contact list. I can only stop it by exiting it, or pulling my cable out of the wall and disabling my connection.      Ugh I was really dissapointed when I got this virus, I’m pretty good with computers im like why the frick did I click that link THEN let it dl T_T. Well it worked, I think. It’s stopped spamming and the msconfig stays open.

     Theres still one thing bugging my ie7 that starded happening after I got this stupid thing. Whenever I click home page (google) on a new tab it makes multiple new tabs instead, usually one or two but sometimes it opens like 20, making my ie7 crash. Is this related?

     Thanks again for the fix. Yes you should add a loading bar, my friend didnt trust that it fixed his comp because it was so fast.

     Another thing, how the heck does this hide from like every single antivirus ever. And are you safe if ur using mac? One of my friends had a mac comp and they clicked the link.

     Disy, i had the same problem as u. Even though i eradicated the file, it still keeps sending crappy msgs to my contacts periodically. So i follow Kelvin’s method n did the following:

     “just open up c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts that file in NOTEPAD and delete EVERYTHING except the line which says 127.0.0.1 localhost”

     For a few hours it seems alright n i tot its cleared. but after tat i tried using my com n it resurface again sending crap msg n hanging my com. Then someone advised me to do the following:

     turn off “system restore”, then go to safe mode and delete the prodigys323.dll and picturealbum2007.zip files. reboot into windows, and login to msn n see if the problem is still there.

     N now it seems tat all is fine for the time being. Hope this helps

     If u run avg initially when this prodigy is still in ur system32, avg doesnt detect anything at all. I did tat n avg told me tat my com is safe. However, i copy the prodigy to another folder in my c drive n run the scan again n avg recognised it as a virus. So i’m more to the believer side on tat.

     Here is wat i did.

     3. try out the various solutions
     4. problem solved…………………………………………………. .Hahaha. i’m pretty sure this is not wat u all wanna hear.

     Ok lets get straight to point
     1. I downloaded the msn cleaner application from here (http://forums.hardwarezone.com/showpost.php?p=23970655&postcount=1) n ran it. It detected the file n i deleted it. But still doesnt solve the problem of hangin ur msn with sudden attks of multiple chat windows wth chat msgs but at the bare minimum, it prevented the file from being sent out to others.
     2. Went to download AVG n stumbled upon kevin’s impfix n downloaded both n run them both. But this doesnt solve the problem yet.
     3. Stumbled upon a few websites offering solutions n quite a few of them mentioned abt the nid to search n destory this “rdshost.dll”, but after searching thru, couldnt find it.
     4. Read thru these comments n saw kevin’s reply “just open up c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts that file in NOTEPAD and delete EVERYTHING except the line which says 127.0.0.1 localhostâ€� n followed that. It seemed alright after a few hours leaving my com on with msn. But after tat ard 30-40 mins into usage, same problem occurred again
     5. Went to forum n requested for help n someone advised “turn off “system restoreâ€�, then go to safe mode and delete the prodigys323.dll and picturealbum2007.zip files. reboot into windows, and login to msn n see if the problem is still there.” If u hav problem as i encountered when trying to delete the prodigys323.dll, pls refer to this (http://forums.hardwarezone.com/showpost.php?p=25043516&postcount=60). Credit to the alias pika_hippo for this solution.

     Last known occurence of the msn problem is on Friday night 10th aug 2007.

     As mentioned before, impFix probably works for *most* MSN viruses, if not all.

     However, if it doesn’t, a few things to try:

     1. Try the methods the rest of the guys stated here in the page – you can find them easily – its the long long messages around

     2. Download http://yandao.com/files/wtfIshThis.exe – click Scan and Save Log, and send me the log file

     3. MSN me, with the above log file, at hot_wired13 [at] hotmail.com

     There you go. Should be easy =)

     Hi my Anti-Virus actually detects W32.Mubla which is found to be a msn virus. However it also detects Trojan.Pandex which does not seems to be so… It tries to send out spam but was blocked by the Anti-Virus.

     After using different Anti-Virus to kill the thingy, it seems ok but am still concern about the sercurity (stealing of passwords etc.). In this case, wanted to try to use your little fix here, but I suppose there’s nothing to be killed… Still can use? Anything that I should take note?

     It didn’t fix the problem! When I rebooted my comp, the open file box still came up (for an msdos file: msn.com). It has me very frustrated! Any other suggestions on how to get rid of that annoyance? (Other than buying a new comp/operating system – cuz thats NOT an option for me atm) Thanks.

     I ran impfix & it didnt get rid of the virus. Then someone recommended a hi-end internet security program, which I installed but it didn’t detect the virus. I’ve since learned that the ONLY way to fix the problem is to uninstall & reinstall pretty much everything on the drive! Most cases, all info/files/programs can be saved – but sometimes the OS has to be erased & reinstalled. When I clicked on it this time, that IS prog IMMEDIATELY quarantined it. Says its a PE_Generic virus (file infector) aka: Worm.Win32.Dianyz.a (Kaspersky), Downloader (Symantec), W32/Vimes.A (Avira), W32/Whld-B (Sophos), Virus:Win32/Vimes.C (Microsoft) – the names in () are the virus protection programs. I’d hate to think you’re openly trying to infect computers – so I tell you this so you can chk if theres a problem. I would have contacted you privately, but I cant run messenger or my email program now thanks to that virus – and I’m POSITIVE its the only one still on my comp. Truly sorry….

     basically my msn last night showed that no one was online when people were it also accordding to people i were talking to wouldnt let them send messages to me straight away and apparently signed me in out etc when i was still online. also shows me appearing offline to people

     I don’t know what virus attacked my msn account but all my contacts got deleted. Luckily email no problem. I can’t chat with any friends now. I first suspected when I received a failure email notice to emails I’ve never sent. And I’m so cautious as I’ve never click on any links or files sent over msn.
